Intro

The Nevada Health Insurance Exchange application, the official Nevada State marketplace for health insurance under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Obamacare).

Challenges

• This was a brand new project that had not been attempted before.

• A large amount of business rules and regulations to navigate.

• The largest scale project in which I have ever participated.

• Requirements were under constant and abrupt change.

Process

UX group was responsible for user research, creation of personas and user flows, front-end development, and branding implementation. We built a tremendous Axure prototype, which was used as a major hub to share project requirements, functional specifications, and interaction flows.

Outcomes

• Post-launch feedback on overall user experience was quite positive.

• We split numerous complex flows into a simple step-by-step interaction.

• We reduced the average amount of information displayed on the screen by a tremendous amount by applying progressive disclosure.

• In conditions of extreme uncertainty, we found a balance between meeting business requirements, government regulations, and user needs.
